KZN SOUTH COAST FLOOD
DISASTER : JUNE 2008

Dear fellow Lions and
friends
Just when we start to
think that the whole world has gone mad, the human spirit
prevails. We have been touched by the reactions that we have
received from Lions from all over Lions Multiple District
410 regarding the flooding disaster in our area. Messages of
support have already been received from Council Chairman
Tony Scheffel, District Governor Mike Cousins, PCC Cliff
Hocking and the Midrand Lions Club, PCC Hennie Van Der
Westhuizen from Somerset West, DG Holger Sircoulomb from
Windhoek Lions (410A), PDG Diana Sochen and the Sea Point
Lions Club, DGE Paula
Lang, Gordons Bay Lions, VDGE Liz Wilkie & DC John Houston,
Table View Lions, Lions Ray & Gloria Searle, Jeffreys
Bay Lions Club, PDG Clive Fox, Parow Lions Club and Lion Sandy Roman, Bergvliet Lions Club.
There is also good news.
Outgoing District Governor Mike Cousins applied for a
LCIF Emergency Grant of US$10 000-00 for the South Coast area.
The grant has been approved
and the monies have already been received. Council Chairman Tony also circulated a message to
all Lions Clubs in Multiple District 410 (South
Africa/Namibia) and requested that clubs consider donating
any extra monies that they might have in their charity
accounts towards this disaster relief.
We have already received very generous donations of R10
000-00 from the Kokstad Lions Club and R500-00 from the
Kimberley Lions Club. All Clubs along the coast, namely
Kingsburgh, Amanzimtoti, Scottburgh, Hibberdene, Port
Shepstone, Shelly Beach and Ramsgate are working closely
together to ensure that food parcels are distributed to
those in need. Lions, the Norwegian Settlers' Church,
Genesis Centre and the Red Cross are all involved and the
Church is being used as a distribution point.
The 2008 Lions Show,
which had to be moved to the
Douglas Mitchell Sports Fields in Uvongo, was a spectacular
success considering the fact that we only had 3 days in
which to move this massive event. We received overwhelming
support from the South Coast Herald newspaper and the
general public. Some of the proceeds
from this major event will also be donated towards flood
victims. For photographs of this event, please
visit
www.southcoastshow.org.za. The combined efforts of the
Sheppie Lions, Port Shepstone Rotary Club and Margate and
Port Shepstone Round Table Clubs managed to raise an
additional R5000-00 at the Show for flood relief.
The outpour of generosity from all over our
Multiple District has confirmed our belief in the power of the
human spirit and dedication of our organisation towards
serving those in need.
